Harvey Finds His Way To Top of CNYMS Feature at Cayuga County

By Rich Vleck, Weedsport, NY (April 29, 2007)- Don Harvey rebounded with a run-in with the outside wall in his heat race to win the season opener at Cayuga County to reaffirm why he is the defending Central New York Mini Sprints Champion

Harvey moved up from his ninth place starting position and took over the lead on lap 9, hanging on the rest of the way to capture his first win at the high-banked 3/8-mile Cayuga County Fair Speedway. The Matthews Buses No. 44 was clearly the class in the field in the feature, but it was not an easy road for Don to get his car handling that well.

“I have to give all the credit to (Rick Hench),” noted Harvey in Victory Lane about his chassis builder. “We changed everything, and I mean everything on the car after the heat and it was just awesome.”

Halfway through heat 2, the defending A-Verdi Storage Containers CNYMS Champion hit the wall in turn 1 and 2. The Milford, NY driver stacked up just outside of the redraw and started ninth in the feature. After all of the changes on the car though it was only a formality until he was in the lead.

Jared Fink used the pole position to get out into the lead for the first three laps. On lap four, Fink lost grip exiting turn four and handed over the top spot to Jimmy “Bubba” Broderick.

Broderick, who won his first career CNYMS win at CCFS in 2006, was forced to use a borrowed back-up ride after suffering mechanical problems to his main mount in hot laps. The Brookfield, CT driver, as well as winner of Heat 1, lead until lap 9 when lapped traffic slowed him up just enough to allow Harvey to slide by.

Heat 2 winner Mike Kiser would eventually move his way forward as well, splitting Broderick and Fink on lap 15 to take over the runner-up spot. Broderick would finish in third, with Fink fourth, ironically placing the top-4 in 2006 points in the same order as Sunday’s finish. Jamie Kiser completed the top-five.

Sixteen cars in all were on hand for a beautiful afternoon to kick off the 2007 A-Verdi Storage Containers CNYMS Tour. Brian Pompino suffered problems in hot laps and was the only driver not to start the feature. Two cautions flew in the 20-lap A-Main, both for single car incidents.

The Central New York Mini Sprints are tentatively scheduled to next race at the Bully Hill NY Sprint Nationals at the Black Rock Speedway on May 19. Stay tuned to for up-to-the-minute updates.
